Forest Flutters: A museum installation, immersive performance, and touring production
Danica, as the creative director and concept creator, worked with visual artists, theatre artists and community members to transform one Capitol Modern’s Gallery into an endemic forest. Community members were invited to design leaves, which were on display outside the exhibit. In addition, Danica visited each special education classroom that attended the performance for sensory workshops prior to the performance. In these workshops, students were able to get acquainted with the themes of the performance as well as the sensory experiences they would be experiencing to best prepare them for their visit. Danica observed how the students interacted with the sensory objects, sounds and smells, which directly influenced certain elements, invitations and scenes in the show.
She worked in partnership with Honolulu Theatre for Youth, Capitol Modern, Solomon Enos and Karen Keifer, who all inspired her throughout the process!
Forest Flutters at Capitol Modern was a free, multi sensory art installation that housed an immersive performance designed for young people with developmental differences and disabilities. Audiences adventured into a Hawaiian forest to meet, touch, feed, and dance with endemic birds from January to June, 2024. Forest Flutters will be transforming into a touring performance for preschool students and touring throughout the Hawai’i archipelago in the fall of 2024.
