Between Two Worlds
A Story of Persephone.
Between Two Worlds was a site-specific installation that took place in March, 2019 in Scudder Park, Tempe. Loosely based off of Greek mythology, Seph discovers that she can find home and acceptance in two very different worlds. As director and playwright, Danica worked with elementary, high school, and university aged people to help bring this world to life. The script was developed at a residency at the Barn Arts Collective in Bass Harbor Maine, and then workshopped in Arizona with students from the school right next to the park. The students ideas influenced the costumes, set, and story.
“DogEar was incredibly organized, responsive and professional. They really responded to the needs and interests of the groups that they worked with on this project including community members at a public meeting, students in an after-school program, and city staff. In the months leading up to the event DogEar worked on developing their performance and sharing the story of "Between Two Worlds" with elementary school students in the Kid Zone after school program. The kids involved in this program were very excited for DogEar visits and were invested in the story and activities lead by DogEar during each of their visits.” —Julie Akerly, City of Tempe Arts Engagement Specialist
As a part of the festival, audience members were invited to create flowers to put in Demeter’s garden, and create streamers that answered the prompt “What is home?” These streamers were then strung on the Tree where Demeter and Persephone lived.
